Standardized vs. Targeted Umbilical Cord Tissue Collection
Standardized Collection
The umbilical cord is collected and short-term stored on ALL newborns. The umbilical cord is sent to the laboratory if the mother meets the hospital’s conditions for determining a potentially exposed newborn or if the newborn shows signs or symptoms of withdrawal. If neither criteria is met, the umbilical cord is discarded. Click below to view the standardized collection instructions.
Targeted Collection
The umbilical cord is collected ONLY if the mother meets the hospital’s conditions for determining a potentially exposed newborn. Click below to view targeted collection instructions.
